It's not often we feel compelled to link to another website, but this is worth seeing. Engadget has a bit of a hands on with Sony's attempt at a gesture control device - the Playstation Move. You can view the Engadget article here

The Move works in conjunction with a Playstation Eye (the Playstation 3 camera) to track full 3D movement on your Playstation 3. The ping-pong style balls on the end allow the Eye to track your hand movement and map it to game space. This works in much the same fashion as full body motion capture is accompanied for animated movies and games today, and is expected to give a much wider range of movement than the Wii control system. As you can see from the photos, the "balls" of the controllers can be lit up, presumably allowing it to better work in darker environments.

A number of PS3 titles are in development which take advantage of the new control system. The expected release date is November in the US, so we can only guesstimate that we may be lucky enough to see it just before Christmas here in Australia.

So by the end of the year, or at least at the start of next, all 3 major consoles will have gesture based systems available. This will make things very interesting.

Sony has some balls to try to take on MS's Natal.
I've heard of hand-ball, but this is rediculous!
Anyone got a ball-park figure on what this will set you back?

Five years and this is the best they could come up with? FFS. I still prefer Nintendo's design, especially since the Motion Plus makes everything so so sooo much better.

It should allow a much greater range of movement, and proper mapping in 3D space compared to the Wii, where the thing always has to be line of sight to the sensor bar. Plus you have a more powerful system, which should allow more interesting games. Oh, and it's not on Wii so you may actually get some decent 3rd party games.

G-Train: Around $100 for the full package (including some sort of game pack in) so not really too cheap!

It's pretty blatant really. What's most disappointing is that the don't have any interesting games to show off. You've had five years to work on your Wii impression... and you've come up with sword fights? And sports?

I've seen a few videos, it does have one or two technical advantages over the Wii (as far as sensing goes) but nothing truly game changing and nothing that will blow my socks off. That street fighting game is one of the lamest things I've ever seen.

Honestly, nothing has really impressed me since the Wii first came out. Wii Sports and Zelda and that, even though they were sorta basic, were awesome then, the first time playing with that sort of tech. Since then it's only been little, incremental improvements. M+ is cool but not amazing (I'd say practical), this is maybe one small step over that, and even Natal seems a little dull.

I think rather than astounding us with technology they should be coming up with awesome applications for them. Build a dashboard chat for Live where you can control your avatar like a mocap thing while you talk to friends, simple stuff like that would be cool.

Yeah.. TBH I think the Natal may have more in the software front. Microsoft has been developing it for a while, and they seem pretty excited by it.

The Move really just seems like an attempt to cash in, the Natal (seems to me at least) to genuinely do something different.

I agree - It pains me to say it but MS (IMO) is puttin together a better product. Natal seems alot more polished, innovative and generally new-tech. The Move strikes me as nothing more than an underwhelming upgrade to the PS3 Eye. If Sony really want my money, they'll have to alot better than a simple upgrade.

Too bad all the developers who have worked with Natal so far have said it's buggy and a pain to work with. A lot of them don't see the point in developing for it, and most of them are jumping on board with Sony on this one. I mean, it took the Socom 4 guys maybe 6 weeks or so to develop controls to rival (and perhaps best, from what I've heard) the best the Wii has to offer for an FPS.

I really don't think Microsoft are going to win this one, nor do I think they've developed anything more than a gimmick.

Yeah, I've also heard Natal is pretty shoddy. Devs are going to hit the launch date and then patch the hell out of their games.

Hopefully next gen when everyone is making their uber powerful consoles with motion in mind, we'll get some cool sh*t.

I just want a squad based shooter where I can issue orders by waving my hand around and pointing etc.

That would be epic! Now throw some voice recognition in and I'd be in heaven.

From what I've heard, that's essentially how SOCOM 4 works with the move. I don't think the move will work with the game outside of the little tech demo they made, though. I think they mentioned something about compatible DLC in the future.

I have the burning desire to force that controller down his throat - what a toser. The basis of that add is like mocking a 69 GTO Judge for being fuel inefficient when compared to a f*kn Prius.

I'm not gonna get into a rant, simply put - atleast a Wii controller doesn't look like a gay sex-toy.

I don't really care if the Move is better or worse than the Wii-Mote, because the console war is boring. The character is supposed to be obnoxious, and the commercials aren't supposed to be taken seriously. I've had a good chortle at all of them so far.

I also don't see how it looks like a gay sex toy. A vibrator, sure. Those aren't really exclusive to homosexuals, though. The point is I think you suck for using gay as a derogatory term.

Now look at my new Mario toys ^o^

The premise of the ad is great, the execution not so much. It's all just way too obvious, it just ends up coming off as silly. Whether the Move is any good remains to be seen, but I certainly wouldn't mind getting my hands on one and seeing how it works.
