6th May 2004, 11:03am
ATI has launched their Radeon X800 VPU to be hitting the PC real soon through various manufacturers. The X800 uses 16 parallel pixel pipes and 6 vertex pipes to process a staggering 8 billion plus pixels and nearly 800 million vertices per second. The chip has been manufacturered using the .13 micron semiconductor process by TSCM. In terms of scale to its 9800XT the X800 visual processor is twice as fast. Containing GDDr3 memory to drive higher performance it should work in most existing PCs without requiring major power supply and cooling upgrades. New features include new compression technology called 3Dc which should help with creating better looking maps that will be in higher resolution. Two X800 products will be available the Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition and the X800 Pro.

The Platinum Edition will be powered by a 16 pipe pixel processing engine clocked at 520MHzm which will containt 1.12GHz GDDR3 memory and a 256bit memory interface. Retail pricing will start from about USD $499.

As for the Pro edition it will retail for about USD $399 and will be powered by a 12 pipe pixel processing engie clocked at 475MHz. GDDR3 memory will have a 900MHz data rate with a 256 bit memory interface. For more details check out ATIs official site www.ati.com
