Looks like that downtime is a bit more sinister than we all initially thought: Sony's Patrick Seybold, senior director, corporate communications and social media, issued a statement on the PlayStation Blog stating that external extrusion is the cause of the extended downtime.

"An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share."

Worth noting that Anonymous has denied responsibility.

They bothered to take down Sony's websites after Sony sued the guy that jailbroke the PS3 and was granted a subpoena for the IP addresses of people that had visited the guy's blog.

Eh, I've never had any love for PSN. I've barely played anything online, and barely used their other services.

Most of what I played was a complete mess too. Metal Gear Online comes to mind. Killzone 2 worked fine but I don't really like Killzone.

My only reason for checking it out now is for when Journey comes out.

Yeah but that was in response to capitalism and greed on Sony's behalf - what has Sony done recently to piss them off?

They've done more with less justification.

I don't think that group is malicious, or responsible for this.. They were ddos to prove a point, not to profit from it.

This attack will be somebody else for purely material gain, probably sold to organized crime groups for many millions

I know they didn't do it this time - I was commenting that mentioning their denial was relevant since they have done similar things previously.

Well at least Sony will be offering some form of compensation for the inconvenience.

They just announced a heap of games free for Plus users, I wonder if that promo will still be going while everyone gets Plus for free?

Yeah shit if it's only for Plus users... rewards program for getting hacked.

Saw the thing about SOE. Something like another 25 million on top of the 72mill already compromised. Messed up.
