GameCube Struggling Downunder

We all know it is happening, but Herald Sun has posted an article on the state of Nintendo in Australia.

According to Inform, the GameCube holds a small six per cent of the console market. Xbox was second with 29 per cent, and Sony's PS2 with 65 per cent.

The PS2 has sold more than 424,000 units since launch, with Microsoft's Xbox 209,000 units, and the GameCube dragging behind with on 67,000 units. David Yarnton, Nintendo Australia sales and marketing director, admits disappointment with the last 12 months of sale.

"We would like to do better. It has been a really tough market in Australia. We have the cheapest consoles in the world," he says.

He also goes on to say that "Coming out third (behind PS2 and Xbox) didn't help,".

"All we (Nintendo) do is video games. Our strategy has always been based on the games."

"They are excellent games and hardware sales have increased because of it."

Yarnton says Nintendo won't follow Microsoft's lead and write off significant losses for each console sold.

"We are a games company. We don't have Windows (to fall back on)".

"We haven't got to the point of throwing money away for the sake of egos and market share."
