Japan Gets Fi-red Up
DS
11th May 2005, 12:00am
Satoru Iwata has revealed more about the DS online program. He said that the service will be called 'Nintendo Wi-Fi' (rather than DS Wi-Fi), which suggests the Revolution may use the same networks. Nintendo plans to set up 1000 new Wi-Fi hot spots across Japan. These will be specifically geared for the DS online service. This will help DS owners in Japan who don't have wireless routers at home.As we already know, the DS online service will be completely free. No additional hardware will be needed to make the DS online ready - unless you want to play from home with a wireless router. Connections require minimal changes, and even less if it's Nintendo-approved hardware.
In a Nintendo hotspot, connecting will be instantaneous with no need to alter software settings or enter passwords. However, third-parties are able to charge for specific games to be played online, such as complex MMORPGs.
