Microsoft Phasing Out Points and Xbox Originals
Xbox 360

A few more details have been released at media breifings at this year's E3 about Microsofts plans for the Xbox 360 over the next year.
First off, arcade games and DLC will be purchasable by credit card through the Xbox LIVE marketplace, which also means through your PC, mobile phone, and anywhere that you can get access to Xbox.com. This in turn means that Microsoft Points will slowly be phased out. Don't worry though, your current points won't just disappear.
By having a credit card option, this allows Microsoft to begin offering full Xbox 360 games through Xbox LIVE. Starting with classics such as LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Xbox 360 owners will be able to purchase titles for as low as $19.99US (we assume $29.95AUD). This will mean the game is permanently purchased on your account, and once you download it you will be able to simply turn your console on and select the game, instead of changing discs. The only negative side is that there most likely won't be any figurines or tin cases for the downloaded games, but Microsoft has that covered.
Avatars will now have accessories, such as the "I attended E3 2009" trophy being handed out to all participants of E3. We saw an avatar with a Warthog (the 4WD vehicle in the Halo games), driving it around with a remote control. This could be the way of the future for pre-order bonuses.
This new service is why Microsoft has chosen to end the run of Xbox Originals. You will still be able to purchase all the current Xbox Original titles that are on the marketplace, but no new titles will be added.
No release date for this new dashboard experience has been announced yet, but we assume Microsoft wants to get it up and running as soon as possible.

I know digital distribution is the way of the future, but it's going to be interesting to see how badly it hurts stores like GAME and EB. People will always want hard copies of games, but every little action like this is slowly deterring more customers from going to the mall. Also online game stores. Why buy it online and wait 3 days for it to come in the mail when you can just buy it online and wait 2 hours for it to download?
yeearrghhhhh i'm gonna go hug my collectors edition tins!
I'd prefer digital downloads for everything, but then I'm mainly PC and that's how I roll anyway.
People with limited download limits would still make the trek to the store to buy something. I've never been a fan of downloading something when I don't need to.

I'm probably half half at the moment, thanks to Steam, but still lean more towards store-bought. On PC it's download all the way.
I wouldn't want a console that uses a DD system, because you replace those things twice a decade and they would just love to break compatibility or make you buy them all over again (looking at you, Nintendo).

Sony are about to do the same with the PSP Go. There won't be a way to get a digital version of a game that you have previously bought on PSP.
I don't quite see the difference? You already use your credit card to buy points to buy games.. now they're just quoting them in dollars instead of points? What's the diff?
Traditional retail is dead anyhow.. you only have to go into a place such as EB Games these days to realise how sh*tty it's all become. It's about 3/4 of the games are 2nd hand, and sometimes it's hard to even find a new copy of a game. And the games are way overpriced as well, so nobody buys from there either. JB is heading that way too. It all gives the feel of like Cash Converters, which is incredibly shabby.

Sony are about to do the same with the PSP Go. There won't be a way to get a digital version of a game that you have previously bought on PSP.
I heard they are putting stations in store to load UMDs to the Go's harddrive or some such thing. Probably scrambles the UMD after.

yeah we'll see if that eventuates. i hear Sony is making this thing called HOME on ps3!

i very much doubt the UMD stations will be widespread if they are even done at all, would cost sony an arm and a leg, easier just to dump the failed format and begin anew.
to be honest it was stupid for sony to try and contend with the nintendo in the handheld market
I don't see digital distrubution taking over, particularly in Australia, any time soon. With games being as large as 10gb, who'd want to DL for a week - kill your DL limit and have no backup, all to save a few dollars?
