Retro Studios Reboots Donkey Kong Country
Wii
16th June 2010, 9:06pm

Retro Studios has a pretty stellar track record: three AAA Metroid Prime games, all critical and commercial successes. With Team Ninja taking on the Metroid mantle, Retro has set its sights on another franchise needing some TLC: Donkey Kong. Since Rare is busy making, um, Kinect Sports (cough), it's up to Retro to bring the Donkey Kong Country franchise into the twenty-first century with Donkey Kong Country Returns.
Oh yes, that means fast-paced 2D platforming in a gloriously 3D setting. Check out the trailer and let the bubbly nostalgia wash over you.

Should be pretty good fun, but I dunno if I'd pay full for a 2D DK game.
It's just so weird to think Retro are doing it.

Well, it wasn't going to Rare.I think they'll do a great job, I'm really looking forward to this as I loved the Donkey Kong Country games.

Are any employees from the goldeneye-era Rare still employed with Rare?

I think the founding bros are still there? And I'm sure there are still some others, but it's been a long time.
The founders quit in 2007. Many of the original Goldeneye team went on to form new companies, like Zoonami, Free Radical etc. Several are still with Rare at Microsoft. Free Radical became Crytek UK after Haze flopped, but still has a lot of ex-Rare guys. A few went to Rockstar and Codemasters.

Man, Free Radical, what was with Haze? That game was arse.
Oh well!
Dunno about you guys but I think it looks like an amazing return for the Donkey Kong Country series and I personally cannot wait.not hugely interested in this - looks extremely linear.
Wha? You do realise its a Donkey Kong Country game which means sidescrolling and inherent linearity? I mean, I'm sure there'll still be the level map screens that'll have branching paths and all, but what more can you expect in a DKC title?
