Just when we were commenting that the 3DS reception seemed to have been quite muted, Nintendo Australia reveals that the system sold 31,000 units in the first four days of release. This makes it the fastest selling handheld system of all time in Australia.

The Wii still holds onto the title for biggest first week sales, though only just, with 32,000 units. Sales of the home console now sit at over 2.1 million in Australia - so roughly one in ten people owns one.

Now, it is worth noting that this first week sales report is based on data gathered by Nintendo through its retail partners. The independent body that normally reports on figures (and is usually cited by Nintendo Australia) is GfK Australia. That's not to suggest that there's any foul play involved, but it's a little confusing that they claim sales of 31,000 in four days and yet that they haven't/didn't break the 32,000 sales mark in a full week, with three more days to sell.

We'll keep an eye out for the independent confirmation, but it seems like the 3DS isn't off to a bad start.

We are such a small country.

31,000 units seems so tiny!

I'd be pretty happy if I managed to sell 31,000 of something in a couple of weeks.

31,000 dollars - at a cent each?
