Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo DS was Australia's best-selling console of 2008 for the third consecutive year. 2008 saw more than 800,000 DSs find homes, with more than 212,000 in December alone. The install base now sits at 1.7 million in Australia.

Wii also crossed the one million mark last year, and at 111 weeks since launch, it was the fastest console to do so. The Nintendo DS previously held the record at 152 weeks. 685,000 Wii systems were sold in 2008, of which 191,000 were sold in December.

On the software front, eight of the top ten console games for 2008 are Wii or DS titles: Wii Fit (1), Wii Play (2 - though this one's debatable since everyone buys it for the controller), Mario Kart Wii (3), Mario & Sonic At The Olympics [Wii] (4) Brain Training (7), Mario & Sonic At The Olympics [DS] (8), Super Smash Bros. Brawl (9), and Big Beach Sports Wii (10 - incredibly depressing).

So, what's coming soon? Well, Trauma Center: New Blood and the 100 Classic Book Collection for Nintendo DS are out now. We can also look forward to quote "NEW PLAY CONTROL! PIKMIN" unquote on February 26 and quote "NEW PLAY CONTROL! MARIO POWER TENNIS" unquote on March 26. They're the Gamecube games updated with Wii controls.

That'd be enough for me! Nintendo continue to move huge amounts of hardware, pretty incredible really. Why the Wii continues to sell so well is a mystery to me. Those casual gamers must love it to bits.
