Get out your jumper, because it's getting pretty frosty in hell. Yes, as promised, PlayStation Home has made it out before the end of 2008 in an open beta than can be accessed from the PlayStation menu of your PS3. Home was announced in early 2007 (but had been in development for several years prior) with a scheduled release of September or October that year. The date had been continually pushed back, but now the wait is finally over.

Home is Sony's answer to Second Life - a 3D environment where users can create representations of themselves, decorate their own personal apartment and connect with the wider community. The world features shops and arcades that can be interacted with, and serves as a game launcher for parties of friends that want to play together. The technology behind it is impressive.

It's a surprisingly skimpy 77MB download, but be prepared to set aside a good three gigs of space on your hard drive. Any new environment you enter will require further downloads; honestly, I would have preferred the option to just download everything at once.

So, was the wait worth it? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

It seems entirely pointless to me.

Second Life > Home

Though SL could use an engine similar to Home's..

WFT - I was excited about it, but looking through it, it just seems so over the top.

Sony game ideas:

Announce console along with games
Release console
Delay games
Delay games some more
Delay just a few more months
Put up a release date... then delay them a little longer (I'm actually surprised LBP is out already)

Finally release games almost two years after initial console announcement

Games don't live up to expectation anyway.

Fail.

Said game in mind is SOCOM Confrontation, but HOME fits in quite nicely as well.

Home's not a game though. I'm sure you know your Sony game ideas are almost completely inaccurate, they didn't launch the PS3 with a lot of games, it's true, but they did deliver most of what they promised for launch (e.g. Motorstorm and Resistance, which were very popular). Nearly every other game has come out in a reasonable timeframe imo, so I don't have much to complain about.

Nick: I don't think Killzone 2 ever had a release date though..not until recently anyway.

It was announced May 2005! When watching a new trailer I don't think you're meant to infer that you'll be waiting nearly four years before it comes out.

I wouldn't say that. It's not like it's the first time a game has taken that long to be released.

No, but the average "first trailer released to game released" time would be far less than four years. If today I showed you a trailer for my new game, Schmillzone 2, you wouldn't be thinking 'man, can't wait for 2012!'.

Of course, but it's not as simple as that. You have to show people something to alert them to the existance of the new game you're developing, that's all the trailer was for (other than hyping the PS3 as well, which it certainly did). Nobody can complain that its taken this long for the game to be released as they never promised anything, other than then fact that the game would be released at some point in the future. Sure, maybe they showed it a little earlier than was really neccessary, but that was their choice.

Sure you can complain. There's an implication that 'hey, we have footage, this game is well into development, not too long to wait until we play it'. I don't think there is any way that the game can live up to what people have expected of it since we've been waiting for four years for it. It might not be entirely fair, but the longer we have to wait for something, the better we expect it to be. Spore is a good example of this. We get a stack of press releases every week announcing the development of new projects. They chose to release a trailer, which is a step further than simply announcing it is in the works. Your expectations are different. I don't know how much of a Killzone fan you are - I haven't played the first one. But if I were a massive Killzone fanatic, seeing the trailer in 2005 would have been amazing. You don't expect to have to wait four years to play it.

Team fortress 2 was announced in 1998 and didn't come out till late last year.

I agree with Nick though it is almost cruel to tell people a game is coming then make them wait 4 years. It is their choice but maybe they made the wrong one.

What can you actually do with it?

Just wander around and look at things? Is there any trading system, or anything like that to buy interesting new items?

It's a game launcher, so you can grab a party of friends and move from game to game. Otherwise it's mostly just decorating your apartment and dancing. Some arcadey games are available like pool, bowling etc. and you can buy clothes and furniture.

I might d/l just to try it but everything I've heard makes it sound crap.
As for Killzone 2... eh the first one was a POS as well imo, but yeah I agree with Nshady and that, 4 years is just silly. It's a kind of pleasant surprise when games you want come on time or much earlier than you were expecting (COD5... mainly because I was away and not keeping track), whereas it sucks when things are delayed near forever. Galaxy and Smash Bros jump to mind in the case of delays.
