Recent rumours strongly suggest that Sony are currently developing a new motion sensitive controller for the PS3. Looking backwards in time, Kotaku reported an interesting rumour back in early 2006 about Sony apparently developing a new controller to compete with Nintendo's Wii remote. Even more interesting is Joystiq's news about Sony having a motion sensing wand in development, back in late 2005. Are these and the current rumours one and the same? Have Sony been secretly working on a new controller since late 2004 (which is when the patent was filed)? All we can do is wait, and hope for an official unveiling, or some kind of comment from Sony.

I don't doubt they would have caught wind of the Wii in some way or form. I guess if Nintendo was designing and focus testing a product, and serious enough to base an entire console around it, than Sony would kind of take the work they've already done as an indicator of possible success and set their R& teams on it.
