E3 hasn't even started yet, and already something big has been unveiled. The long rumored PSP Go is now confirmed, and brings with it a host of new features and changes. The console was revealed via a leaked video featuring SCEA Director of Hardware John Koller from the June edition of Qore, Sony's PS3 exclusive online magazine.

The specifications of the PSP Go (taken from the video) are as follows:

  • The console slides open to reveal the controls underneath
  • It features a 3.8-inch LCD (compared to 4.3-inch on previous PSP models)
  • It comes with 16GB of built-in Flash storage
  • It features Bluetooth to support handset tethering and headsets
  • There is no UMD drive, all games are downloadable
  • It's 43% lighter than the PSP-3000
  • There's a Memory Stick Micro slot
  • There will be full PlayStation Network support, including movie and TV rentals/purchases
  • Full integration with PlayStation 3, similar to the PSP-3000 currently does

The lack of a UMD drive is a big move by Sony, their talk of digital distribution being the way of the future has proven to be deadly serious. On top of the PSP Go itself, the video also shows off LittleBigPlanet for PSP, and makes mention of a new Metal Gear Solid game. The PSP Go is not intended to be a replacement for the PSP-3000, but is instead expected to co-exist with the existing hardware. It's an interesting two pronged marketing strategy, give consumers the choice of a traditional media based console, or a lighter, disc free version. You can check out the first images of the Go attached to this article, we'll keep you up to date on any new developments as E3 runs its course this week.

So they moved the controls inside, but the screen is actually smaller than before? That's odd.

It also seems weird that this is not a replacement, but another option besides the 3000. I wish instead of doing this piddly updates like the DSi and Go, they'd actually just wait another year and completely replace the previous model and do a proper upgrade.

I think that they are providing a big jump into a new concept, having a totally digital based portable console I think is a big step forward. I think providing you with a console that doesn't rely on disk would be a god send. Also I think the smaller screen size is to make the overall console smaller. I understand that people think bigger is better, but when your "on the move" you don't want bulky items weighing you down. All I hope is that it doesn't require a PS3 to use, because then they'll be sitting on the shelves.

What do you want in a proper upgrade though?? Was the DS to DS Lite a proper upgrade to you, or do you want something more substantial?

i think that looks extremely awkward to hold and use
how long before its 'digital download' games are ripped from the console and piracy is just as rampant as before?
i give it a week

I think it looks alright, I think it will actually be more comfortable to use than the current models. As for a download only console being a measure against piracy, I disagree since disc version of new games will still be released. I doubt developers would release much (if any) PSP Go exclusive content.

Looks alright. Would blow if you lost it or got it stolen because you'd lose hundreds of bucks at once.

Not really, all you'd lose is your bandwidth. Once a download has been activated from the Playstation Store, you're able to redownload the content again. As long as you were able to log into your PSN account, you could get your games back. Thinking about it, it could actually be an advantage as physical games are gone forever if lost or stolen.

as long as they dont decide that you have done it too much for some reason, or it becomes corrupt or something

As long as it's not tied to a single PSP. Surely Sony wouldn't let you download games from one account to multiple PSPs?

Screen still as exposed as ever, I see.

16 GB of in-built storage is good to see, though.

Not sure about having to download every game though.. Maybe if everyone had ADSL2+

i just thought of something - if it has 16gb of storage
a) how many games is that?
b) if its delivered over the net, how do you manage games on the system? say you want to play a different game yet your storage space is all used up - does that mean you have to delete a game, download the new one, then redownload the old game when you want to play it again? they should allow some kind of extreme-drm game backup+saves so if you have a lot of games you dont have redownload a lot of stuff to play

its a fair few games probably 50-150 depending on sizes of the games, alot of the games on psp arent THAT big, but you do get the odd huge game such as GTA etc.

i would assume that if you run out of space you would have to delete a game to free up room for another, i suppose it would work alot like steam where things are tied to a PSN id.

You can use memory sticks as well. That wonderful format.

I'd say you're looking at about 25 games on 16GB of storage. PSP games have gotten bigger over time.
