Rumours have been circulating for a while now that Sony have been secretly working on a slimline Playstation 3 to help the struggling console fit better in to your entertainment unit, and recently we heard a little more information than we should have from someone who may or may not work for Sony.

All we can say is that a slimline Playstation 3 is probably closer than you think, and we wouldn't be surprised if an official announcement will be made very soon.

Playstation are well known for making slimmer versions of their consoles, which they have done with every console they have released, including the hand-held PlayStation Portable.

If and when Sony make an announcement, you'll hear it here soon after, so stay tuned!

Of the list of things that Sony could improve upon with the PS3, making it slimmer is some where near the bottom IMO.

If releasing a slim version made the phat version cheaper, then I doubt anyone would complain.

The picture looks like a Wii has been stuck onto the back of a random white slate.

Doubtful, I think it will just be a standard PS3 thats half the width - might even have a lower HD capacity.

I've heard rumours that Sony is actually going to add back backwards compatibility by a firmware update, maybe 3.0.

They can't, I thought it was a hardware change. The reader can't read PS2 discs, nothing a system update can fix.

Originally NTSC regions had the actual emotion engine chip, while PAL had only software emulation. Both were removed. It was nothing to do with the drives. Now it looks like they might be bringing it back: http://www.kotaku.com.au/2009/06/sony-patents-method-to-emulate-ps2-on-ps3/

^ Very, if they pull it off PS3s will be flying out of shops.

Article nshady posted indicates it may only be to allow download of ps2 titles from the Sony Store, e.g. no ps2 discs playable.

Is that due to them selling exceptionally well, or because you can't get any more stock due to Sony's low production rates?
