Looks like Sonic's getting a new game. Kotaku reports that Sega has recently trademarked the tite "Sonic Unleashed" for unspecified consoles.

Now, what appear to be the first pictures of the game have been popping up on Neogaf, even though the game hasn't been confirmed by Sega yet. They look pretty genuine, so it seems likely that Sonic Unleashed is a real game. There's been no confirmation of which console(s) the game is being developed for, but judging by the pics, it seems unlikely that it's going to be released on the Wii.

Stay tuned for Sega's response, and any new info.

It is 2.5D. I never played the Secret Rings though so I don't know if this is a change or not.

Secret Rings has like a scripted level on a set path, so whilst you could move from side to side and up and down, it was basically on rails. You could go backwards but it was slow and painful.

Secret Rings wasn't a bad game, but it took so long to actually get the abilities which made you fast that the first few hours were like playing a game of chess.

Reasonably slow.

Not true. Sometimes you have to press jump to leap over an instant death spike pit you won't even know is there until you die in it, which means you can't play with skill, as much as just hold down the run button and memorize where everything is.

And people wonder why Mario STILL kicks Sonic's ass, with shit design like that.
