Sony has announced they will be cutting the release price of the basic 20GB version of the Playstation 3 in Japan to 47,600 yen (approx $540AUD) - that's nearly 13,000yen ($148AUD) less. No confirmation of a drop on the price of the 60GB model, but it should be proportionate. Previously, the Aussie RRP for the basic PS3 was quoted at $829, so we'll have to see how much exactly it is dropped here.

Sony has also said that the cheaper PS3 will also come with a HDMI interface as standard. Previously, this was only available on the higher end PS3 system.

If the trend continues worldwide, it will put the Playstation 3 head to head in price against the premium Xbox 360 bundle when it releases here in Australia in March, 2007 - however there is always the possibility the 360 may have itself had a price cut by then.

Sliced Comments: Looks like Sony has finally listened to the near universal criticism of the price compared to the other consoles. The reaction should be a positive one. That being said, it puts even further strain on their budgets, because they'll be operating at a greater loss.
