Sony Loses Appeal

Sony today lost its appeal of a previous court ruling in a lawsuit against Immersion Corporation. Immersion develops tactile and haptic technology, which is often used in game controllers. The original ruling ordered Sony to cough up US$91 million to Immersion as a result of patent infringement with the DualShock controller.

The ruling also called for Sony to stop selling Playstation systems, controllers and 47 games that infringed on the corporation's patents. They haven't responded on how they will handle the ruling - they could opt to pay Immersion a licensing fee like Microsoft did with the Xbox controllers (they also ran into a lawsuit with Immersion, but settled out of court).

'Immersion is built on a strong foundation of innovative technology and intellectual property,' said Immersion CEO Victor Viegas after the first court decision, in March 2005. 'We will also continue to vigorously defend our intellectual property for the benefit of our licensees and shareholders.'
