Spore's DRM has widely been lamented as the low-light in an increasingly low-blowing battle against PC piracy. And how effective has it been? See for yourself.

TorrentFreak, one of those nasty sites that let people steal things distribute public domain material and Linux distros, have announced the numbers for their most pirates games of the year. Guess what's at number one?

Let the debate begin anew! Is piracy killing the industry or are pirates the only ones unaffected by the DRM that restricts only legitimate consumers?

Of course pirates are killing the industry. That's the whole point, isn't it?

Does it mention if said pirates A: can play spore online with their torrent copy or B: would have bought it if they couldn't download it?

I don't believe pirates do as much damage as people think. A lot of them would either never buy it in the first place (developers not losing money), or go buy it once they've given it a try (developers making money).

Not all pirates would do that though. Some would just be content having all the things they download for free and spend their money on other things. So that being the case the industry still loses.

I have to say though, I tend to download music illegally before I consider buying the album (unless it's Jimmy E.W. of course) as sometimes the one song you hear that you like doesn't represent the rest of the CD. Last.fm helps negotiate bands without downloading though.

DRM is stupid but what right do you have to try before you buy. If you were not going to pay for it anyway then you don't get it. I read manga online which is effectively the same as pirating to the publishers but I don't try and justify it. It is wrong full stop. You say not all illegal copies are a lost sale and that is true but some are and ultimately if you don't pay for it you don't have a right to download it.

I never said they have a right to, I just think the amount of money the industry claims to lose from it is grossly overrated.

I like how you didn't fully abbreviate.

Fair enough.

I like how you take the time to post about that rather than the subject matter. I was gonna type J.E.W. but I decided not to as I'm not sure people would know that abbreviation and the full name is long.

I don't know the hell J.E.W. is, but he sounds like he has a big nose and likes to count money.

If all pirates magically stopped downloading games, there would still be DRM: To prevent second-hand game sales and to maintain control over content. Saying DRM is only there to stop the pirates is bullshit.

Jimmy Eat World, just to clear things up.
