...as we know it.

As many of you are no doubt aware, rumours have been circulating that the mammoth E3 trade show held in Los Angeles every year would be canceled as a result of major developers pulling out. News circulated yesterday that EA had pulled out due to the rising costs involved in getting their content into the show. While many feared that the E3 show would be canceled entirely, the ESA (that is, the Entertainment Software Association) announced that E3 would be 'evolving'. Douglas Lowenstein, President of the ESA and owner of the expo issued a press release today:

'The world of interactive entertainment has changed since E3Expo was created 12 years ago. At that time we were focused on establishing the industry and securing orders for the holiday season. Over the years, it has become clear that we need a more intimate program, including higher quality, more personal dialogue with the worldwide media, developers, retailers and other key industry audiences.'

According to the release, the E3 expo will still occur in Los Angeles, but will be scaled down dramatically. Instead of large, expansive game demonstrations, we will see a more concentrated and business related show. While the opportunity for demonstrations is still avaliable, a greater focus on press release, media and marketting will be the main concern.

'It is no longer necessary or efficient to have a single industry 'mega-show'. By refocusing on a highly-targeted event, we think we can do a better job serving our members and the industry as a whole, and our members are energized about creating this new E3.'

The evolution of the E3 show will become more apparent in the following months. More on this as we receive it.
