Want Your Mario In HD?

Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo God and creator of the Mario and Zelda (just to name a couple), sat down in a Q&A discussion yesterday. He defended the decision not to include HD support with the Wii, but conceded that the next one down the line will be HD compatible.

His reasoning: the number of HDTVs in home at the moment is 'really not that high, yet. Of course I think five years down the road it would be pretty much a given that Nintendo would create an HD system, but right now the predominant television set in the world is a non-HD set.'

He later added: 'We thought it would be better to create a system that allows you to interact with any TV set you have in your home in an entirely new, different way, and even kind of turn that into a toy for your TV that anyone can pick up, interact with and enjoy - rather than only the people who have a very high-tech, specific kind of TV set.' On a side note, since the Australian government keeps pushing back the cut-off for analogue broadcasts, the impetus to upgrade your TV is not there for most consumers. If the date was set, people would most likely upgrade to a digital receiver, and in doing so, a natural progression would be to get an HDTV. So there you go. The Australian government is responsible for your SD Super Mario Galaxy. Shame on them.
