Xbox announced a partnership with Epic Games,
developers of the legendary Unreal series of games and developers of the Unreal Engine intellectual property. Under the terms of the partnership, Epic Games
subsidiary Scion will contribute to the development of products for Xbox based on
one of its key franchises. These titles will be published by Microsoft Game
Studios.
Founded 12 years ago by Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein, industry veterans who continue to bring experience and leadership to the company, Epic is a technology leader. Epic focuses on developing games for gamers, not for retailers or publishers, and considers gamer "fun factor" as the foundation of the company. More than 10 million games based on the Unreal Engine, which uses cutting-edge 3D technology have been shipped.
"We're looking forward to working with Epic, one of the industry's most respected and successful games developers," said Michel Cassius, Senior Director, Xbox Platform and Marketing. "Their games, such as the Unreal franchise, have thrilled millions of gamers around the world. Technology leadership is one thing that Epic and Xbox have in common - the titles they are developing with us for Xbox will use the power of the console to deliver some exciting gaming experiences."
"We wanted to work closely with Xbox as we have a great relationship already, like working with the Xbox hardware, and feel we can deliver the truest expression of our concepts on Xbox," said Jay Wilbur, Epic Games. "Xbox-only features like its advanced power and Xbox Live mean we can really bring our games to life on the platform. It's a big deal for us to put one of our key franchises exclusively on one platform, so we had to be sure our partner would deliver for us, commercially and creatively. We know Xbox will do that for us."
